A Seat at the Strategy Table is Not a Title Perk
Inclusion in strategy discussions is not automatic, it is earned.
Inclusion in strategy discussions is not automatic. It is earned. Reflections from recent conversations with PM Leaders. Many product leaders want a seat at the strategy table. This is understandable. But inclusion in strategy conversations is not automatic because of titles.
Senior leaders invite people into strategy discussions because they trust their judgement. That trust is built through execution, through sound decision-making on delivery.
Clear trade-offs.
Pragmatic prioritization.
Follow-through.
When this happens consistently, it signals something important.
That this person can be trusted with ambiguity.
It is also important to remember that “strategy” is not a single meeting or an annual offsite. Product leaders demonstrate strategic thinking continuously.
Which problems are framed.
What questions are asked in reviews.
Whether they understand what senior leadership is trying to optimize for.
Over time, the combination of strong execution and understanding of the context changes how leaders perceive you.
You’re no longer asking to be included in strategy conversations. You’re invited because your participation improves the quality of the discussion.
Something to reflect on:
Do your questions increase clarity or activity?
